Personal profile

Research interests

I have been employed at the University of Brighton as an occupational therapy tutor for 17 years.  During this time I have had the opportunity to develop from a clinical practitioner working in mental health into a confident and competent occupational therapy educator.   I have experienced many roles in my post including course leader, admissions tutor, personal tutor, research tutor, module leader, and school representative for areas such as internationalisation and admissions.  All of these roles incorporate liaison with students, academic/technical/administration staff, funding bodies, clinical colleagues and members of the public on a national and international scale. I have been the course admissions tutor for 15 years and within this role I manage all admissions onto the MSc Occupational Therapy (pre-registration) which includes working with team members, patient public representatives, potential and actual applicants to the programme.  My teaching responsibilities include module coordinator/leader where I produce and manage two eight week full time campus based occupational therapy modules.  I create, manage, moderate and mark various different assessments of student learning which also incorporates exam board responsibilities.  Our programme is exclusively problem based learning (PBL) and within this pedagogic approach I am a PBL tutorial tutor in which I work with small groups of students on occupational therapy case ‘problems’.  I also lead the PBL special interest group within the school.  PBL also involves teaching occupational therapy skills and I am responsible for teaching models of practice, craft, activity analysis, occupational therapy theory, ethics, occupational science and evidence based practice.  I also work with a small group of personal tutees where I support them during their training.  I provide research supervision to our masters’ and MRes students where I help students develop their initial research proposal, engage, complete and write up the project.  I also support students during their practice placements and assist with practice education for our practice educators.  Currently I am involved in teaching and assessment on our European Masters Programme which is an international programme involving universities from The UK, The Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden and Switzerland.  Finally, I am extremely keen to enhance the student experience and I am involved in various extra-curricular activities for students including an exchange programme to La Crosse in Wisconsin, Crafternoons, observation of prosection, and a collaborative project with 3-D Craft students.  The nature of my job ensures regular CPD as I am always learning and always updating the content and standards of my teaching.  Occupational therapy is a growing and transitional profession and as an educator I am required to be an active participant in its progression so that our students are fit for practice today and in the future.  My learning is integral to this process and I take CPD very seriously. My primary research interest relates to how engaging in creative activities and in particular crafts can influence health and well-being.  I am currently undertaking a PhD study which focused on embroidering.
