Personal profile

Research interests

My research interests cover several areas: how students learn, barriers preventing progress, and what interventions can be provided to counteract this; the most effective ways to provide feedback & feedforward to students; transitions to university at foundation level, direct entry and postgraudate level; interprofessional education; and, having had a previous career in the national press, I am also interested in how science is portrayed in the media, and how the media can be used to change public attitudes in science-related areas.

I am also involved with providing training to non-qualified assistants who work with NGOs on pharmacy-related areas.

Approach to teaching

I lecture across the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In particular, I have responsibilities as year lead for the School’s Integrated Foundation Year, lead for interprofessional education, as well as Academic Skills Tutor and PASS (Peer Assisted Study Support) Supervisor.

Using a blend learning approach, I teach students a variety of personal and academic skills they will need for their careers, both at university and after graduating. These include: Research Methods (postgraduate level); time management; communication and presentation skills; stress management; general study skills; using reflection as a development tool.
