Space and Place Research Excellence Group

Organisation profile

Organisation profile

The Space and Place Research Excellence Group is founded on the collaborative interconnection of place, space and person: while people inevitably shape place, our making practices are informed and shaped by the place we reside in, be they physical, digital or both. This REG brings together members who are interested in the belonging of person and place and exploring this through a practice-based making approach.

The REG explores how space and place, be that digital or physical, can create (and exclude) belonging and connection to communities and identity that can shape and challenge our collective and individual experience of the world to make a difference. According to Lucy Lippard artworks that actively engage with everyday life and public spaces can improve our sense of ourselves and quality of life. “As such, it can raise the special qualities of everyday life embedded in place” (Lippard, L.1997 p37). In our digitally networked culture, space and place may be real or imagined, it may be virtual, physical or mediated. Creative practice embedded in space and/or place can provide opportunity for new ways of engaging with audiences, locally and globally for cultural, social and economic benefits.
