Sonic and Visual Cultures Research Excellence Group

Organisation profile

Organisation profile

The Sonic and Visual Cultures Research and Enterprise Group explores dynamic intersections between sound, image, and technology across a wide range of artistic, cultural, and social contexts.

As an interdisciplinary forum, the group investigates both the sonic and the visual as interrelated modes of creative and critical inquiry. The REG provides a platform for dialogue and experimentation that connects research, practice, and community engagement; addressing how sound and image operate together to shape experience, identity, culture, or environment.

The group aims to foster impactful collaborations, public engagement, and events that expand awareness of the role of sound and vision in contemporary life. Its members bring diverse expertise spanning film, musicology, fine art, performance, and digital media, engaging with themes such as collaborative creative practices, contemporary and popular music and cultures, analogue and expanded cinema, spectatorship and embodiment, immersive and networked environments, accessibility, sustainability and wellbeing. From opera and sonic environments, research to video journalism and participatory arts, the group’s members integrate theory and practice to investigate how sonic and visual cultures contribute to new ways of knowing, feeling, and connecting.
