Abstract

Due for publication in August 2018, this volume represents the first academic book on the proliifc Spanish filmmaker Jesus Franco Manera. My chapter argues that representations of female subjectivity and desire in Franco's gothic fantasias are not reducible to the dualities of gaze theory and standard critiques of 'objectification', instead offering multiple points of dis/identification as the films struggle (within the constraints of transnational exploitation cinemas as well as the repressive conditions of Francoist Spain), to adjust to (as well as exploit) the changing discoursive landscapes of the "sexual revolution". Drawing in part on Foucault's account of the spirals of transgression and prohibition and the impllantation of perversions in the 'incitement' to 'speak sex', these films are discussed in terms of their mediation of sexological discourses in transmedia , intertextual spaces beoyond the borders of 'cinema itself'.
