The meaning of the rule of law within the European Union: a corpus linguistic approach

Research output: Contribution to journalArticlepeer-review

Abstract

Although the rule of law has become central to the European Union’s ideal, its meaning is not at all clear. In fact, its meaning is not the same in each of the Member States which have their own phrase and understanding. This paper investigates whether a meaning can be found for the rule of law by considering the words and phrases that are associated with the phrase rule of law within European Union documents. The aim is to discover whether there is a distinct meaning to the phrase rule of law within the European Union by identifying its collocates, and determining how the phrase is used.
