Abstract

Introduction
The early recognition of paediatric patients’ deterioration is a fundamental goal of pediatric nursing care. There are several early warning scores in literature and Monaghan’s Pediatric Early Warning Score (PEWS) is indicated as the most user-friendly. The PEWS has been internationally validated in various contexts. However, there is currently no Italian version. The aim of this study is to translate and adapt the PEWS into Italian.

Methods
The PEWS underwent forward and backward translation. The Italian draft has been evaluated by 5 experienced pediatric nurses in order to assess the facade and content validity. Afterwards two nurses independently compiled the PEWS in a sample of 30 patients. The correlation between the scores was evaluated with Cohen’s Kappa.

Results
Good face and content validity was obtained (S-CVI=0.92, I-CVI=0.80-1.00). The correlation between the scores obtained by the two nurses was excellent (Cohen’s Kappa = 1).

Conclusions
This study, despite some limitations, proved that the Italian version of the PEWS is valid and reliable. Further studies are welcome to confirm these findings.
