Abstract

Stefano Santilli is a Senior Lecturer on the Design and Craft Programme, within the Faculty of Arts. Lightmetre was selected for inclusion in the Ecological Lighting exhibition at the Habitare 10 Helsinki Design Fair, Finland. An international group of product designers were invited to send proposals for ecological lighting solutions to a jury headed by Ingo Maurer. Lightmetre is a versatile standard lamp, easily moved and transformed from ambient mode to task light by propping it up to different surfaces. The low energy array of bright LEDs are housed within a minimalist one metre ash wood beam, lightly engraved with increments of measurement - to extend the useful product life even beyond the 50,000 hours of illumination. Lightmetre is one of a series of product proposals that explore notions of value in design.
