    Abstract

What have the mighty Spanish Mondragon Corporation, German banks and the Emmaus movement got in common – better accountability and democratic organisation are two common factors. They have better participative democracy and accountability and perform better as a result. The LME Model paper4 describes, compares and introduces a useful model for evaluating the effectiveness of organisational and democratic structure. This ‘ideal type’ model enables organisations to assess and improve performance. It is useful for people with an interest in improving their organisation’s effectiveness especially those dependent upon members, customers, citizens or service-users.
