Abstract
This essay features in the catalogue for Dance First Think Later - Rencontre entre danse et arts visuels, an exhibition at the Bâtiment d’art contemporain Geneva in 2020, and introduces Melanie Manchot's art practice. The essay explores the elements of dance and performance in Manchot's videos, focuses on Dancing is the best revenge, premiered at the exhibition, as well as Dance (All Night Paris), 2012 and Dance (All Night London), 2017. Drawing on the writing of Catherine Clément and her investigation into various global traditions of trance dance, medieval convulsions and possessions, the essay argues, that dancing brings into motion who we are and how.
