Abstract
Testing our water supplies and recreational waters for faecal indicator organisms has made a significant contribution to preventing infectious
human diseases. More recently, scientists have developed techniques that not only demonstrate the presence of faecal matter, but also suggest
whether the source of contamination is human or non-human, a factor of potentially considerable health significance.
