Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to present an integrated approach to water efficient building design. It presents an overview of the multifaceted factors, opportunities and strategies necessary for holistic design, implementation and use of water in buildings. It commences by identifying the importance of water for use in buildings, but also the importance of water as a vital human and natural resource. The scope for rest of the chapter is then contextualised within the UK context whilst enumerating the current key drivers and opportunities for technological, social and environmental innovation. Case studies are presented where necessary to reinforce important points or to demonstrate learning from practical applications. Users are an integral part of an effective and efficient design process and the final sections of the chapter presents opportunities for engaging users from the design and throughout the lifecycle of the building. The chapter concludes by consolidating the important learning points and highlighting opportunities for improved practise, particularly in the context of global resource uncertainties and climate change.
