Research interests
Stephen Bull is a writer researching photography. He is the author of Photography (Routledge, 2010) and the editor of A Companion to Photography (Wiley-Blackwell, 2019). He is currently researching and writing Photography and Celebrity (Bloomsbury, forthcoming). His writing has appeared in many books, journals and magazines since 1995.
Alongside writing, Stephen exhibited as an artist from 1994 to 2013, making work using found photography. Venues included Tate Britain, The Photographers' Gallery, London, and the International Festival of Photography, China. His photobooks include A Meeting With A Celebrity (2003) and Meeting Hazel Stokes (2006).
Stephen continues to deliver keynote papers and contribute papers to conferences and symposiums. He has run courses at Tate Modern and is the creator and host of the ongoing series of live events Desert Island Pics. Stephen was Course Leader for Photography at University of Portsmouth (2004-2009) and at University for the Creative Arts Farnham (2010-2013). He is Senior Lecturer in Photography at the University of Brighton.
