She completed an MSc in Advanced Midwifery Practice at the University of Surrey in 1995 with some funding from the Kings Fund. Fawzia completed a PhD in 2019 at the University of Brighton.
In 2003, Fawzia was motivated to make the transition into higher education following some adhoc teaching sessions at Anglia Ruskin University and the Royal College of Midwives. She completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Health and Social Care Education at the University of Brighton in 2002. Fawzia is an experienced senior lecturer in Midwifery with extensive experience in teaching, assessing and curriculum design. She was Course Leader to the 18 Month BSc (Hons) Midwifery Course from 2010-2014. She is a reviewer for the British Journal of Midwifery.
Fawzia is committed to integrating knowledge from research to inform clinical practice and Education. She was part of the research team in a joint study with Monash University, Australia and the University of Brighton on the recognition of deterioration in labour by student midwives. Fawzia was encouraged by the Principal Invesigators of this study to further develop this portfolio of work. Her PhD thesis presented a theoretical model of decision making of experienced midwives responding to obstetric emergencies. This was derived from an Interpretivist Case Study design using constant comparative method and analytical strategies that drew from dimensional analysis.
Fawzia also has research interests in valuing individual cultures and OSCE assessment. She has published in peer reviewed journals in these areas and is interested in collaborating with other researchers on projects within these fields.
Fawzia is interested in supervising Masters and PhD students in processes of decision making, obstetric simulation, OSCE assessment and culture and diversity. She has experience in constructivist grounded theory, case study approaches and video elicitation methods.
