Research interests

Dave Williams has been a practising illustrator and educator since graduating from the Central St Martin’s postgraduate illustration course in 1992.

 

Professional Practice

Professionally, Dave has been commissioned by design clients and publishers from around the world and has worked for some of the U.K.’s largest circulated publications.

Selected clients include: - The BBC, The Royal Shakespeare Company, Transport for London, the Wexford International Opera Festival, Big Cat Records, Heinemann Publ., IBM computers, The Economist, Interbrand and the National museum for Scotland.

 

As an image maker, Dave’s work is centred around an enquiry into risk-taking with processes and ideas in the communication of a subject matter. He enjoys working with the qualities of paint, printmaking and drawing, in combination with digital design approaches in response to a variety of thematic sources.

 

Teaching

Dave’s teaching is focused on promoting experimentation and risk-taking and encouraging studying illustrators to develop their work through a combination and variety of processes and approaches. Whilst celebrating traditional illustration practice, the aim is to look beyond that expected territory of the contemporary illustrator, investigating links between personal interest and agenda in image making and the need to work as a visual communicator.

 

Dave’s teaching practice began soon after graduation in 1993 and he has taught in HE subsequently for 22 years and is currently a Senior Lecturer and Year Coordinator at the University of Brighton. Since 1994, he has taught on postgraduate illustration courses at UAL, initially on the Central St. Martins MA Communication Design course and presently on MA Visual arts/ Illustration at Camberwell College of Art.

 

In 2013, Dave was invited to give a talk and deliver workshops in visual play at the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou as part of the 9th International Festival of Illustration and Animation.

In 2017, Dave was invited by the University of Falmouth to be an independent member of the revalidation panel for the of the Cambridge College of Visual and Performing Arts Illustration and Graphic Design courses.
