AbstractDialysis in patients with kidney disease is associated with cognitive decline. The reasons for this are multifactorial but in haemodialysis (HD) patients it is postulated that paradoxical embolisation of material from the extracorporeal circuit may occur across a right-to-left shunt, such as a patent foramen ovale (PFO), and cause cerebral damage.
