Abstract
Background: Breast cancer presents a significant global health challenge with distinct socio cultural implications in the Middle East. In Kuwait, despite advancements in medical technology, late-stage diagnoses are common due to societal taboos and limited awareness. Aim: This study examines the experiences of Kuwaiti women undergoing breast cancer treatment and their use of social media as a support mechanism. Methods: This qualitative Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) study explored the lived experiences of Kuwaiti women with breast cancer. Fourteen Kuwaiti women who actively used social media during their cancer journey were recruited. Data were collected through in depth phenomenological interviews lasting between one and one-and-a-half hours and transcribed verbatim. Data were analysed iteratively using interpretive phenomenological analysis to generate themes and illuminate the meaning of their experiences.
Results: Two master themes emerged: the existential experience, examining the impact of cancer on spirituality, embodied and emotional responses, and the supportive role of social media in providing information and emotional support; and intersubjectivity, which investigates the interpersonal connections and interactions that shape the existential experiences of women with breast cancer.
Conclusion: The findings highlight the complex interplay between personal narratives, socio cultural influences, and digital engagement. Social media emerged as a crucial tool for fostering support networks and enhancing healthcare accessibility for breast cancer patients in Kuwait. This study emphasizes the need for culturally sensitive interventions to improve awareness, reduce stigma, and leverage digital platforms for patient support and education. Recommendations include enhancing digital literacy, promoting early detection practices, and incorporating patient-centred approaches in healthcare policies. Future research should continue to explore the digital experiences of breast cancer patients, aiming to create supportive and empowering environments for women navigating this challenging journey.
