Abstract

The paper looks at the possiblities for self-build housing on a large-scale as a response to the current UK housing crisis. The paper looks at examples of self-build housing at scale including the Viennese 'wild settlement' housing of the inter-war period and the PREVI housing scheme in Lima as well as more recent, UK based examples. The paper relates these examples to the overarching theoretical framwork of Architecture and Freedom with regard to the architect's role and agency in housing design and provision.
