Abstract

'We Made These For the Lantern'

Hand-made 35mm slides projected and transferred to HD video, stereo audio,
7 minutes 34 seconds (Loop)

The original slides featuring in this video work were created by participant artists who took part in the hand-made slide workshop led by Amy Cunningham at Newhaven Art Space, July 2024.

Artists who took part in the workshop were invited to create atmospheric images with transparent and translucent materials such as coloured gels, leaves and other tiny found objects, by cutting up, layering, drawing on and combining them inside 35 mm slide frames. The slides were projected using a Carousel slide projector to reveal the hidden textures and layers in their images. Extracts of text about Newhaven which feature in Amy's recent audio visual work 'Material + Time' (2024) were used as material to layer with and respond to.

The resulting work was exhibited in ‘Outcomes’ (September 2024) at Newhaven Art Space, High Street, Newhaven, East Sussex.

Outcomes was a group exhibition showing recent work by artists Amy Cunningham, Ian Dawson, Sarah Pager and Annabel Tennyson-Davies with the outcomes from Newhaven Art Space community workshops led by the artists.

Outcomes was curated by Newhaven Art Projects, was an Artwave event, supported by Newhaven Enterprise Zone and Art Council England.
