WasteWood: Hollow Waste

Research output: Non-textual outputArtefact

Abstract

Using only timbers which were salvaged from skips, bins, the junk yard, this instrument is a further WasteWood experiment. Firstly, is it possible to create a finely crafted acoustic instrument from junk timbers, but also, does it hold together, play and sound ok. Challenges in re-using timber include sizing of lumber, jointing and grain alignment/direction, strength expectations, existing finishes and replicability. Initial testing indicates that tonality, stability and playability are all on par with more expensive tone woods.
