Uncovering the authentically unpleasant voice of a literary icon: Making Jean Rhys sing on stage

Research output: Contribution to conferencePaperpeer-review

Abstract

The process of writing the opera 'The Trial of Jean Rhys' with Elfyn Jones meant finding the language and cadence of Rhys in her short stories, letters and journals. I looked for the music in her sentences and combined them with singers' breathing exercises, as well as testimony from friends and neighbours, to present a 'living' character on stage.
