Abstract

Publishers have managed the academic publishing industry for centuries, exerting control over the publishing ecosystem. The digital shift has enabled the scholarly publishing ecosystem to make moves away from the oligopoly of academic publishers. In this work, we highlight the importance of open infrastructures for scholarly communication, that allow us to break down the barriers to openness and transparency. We explore these various initiatives, focusing on the role of research libraries as a key component in the developing open publishing ecosystem.
