The Tangent Factories: Graphic Narrative Production and Interdisciplinary Writing as Contemporary Painting Practice

Abstract

*Paper: 20 minutes

The narrative of The Tangent Factories is made by re-ordering the words of novels by Philip K Dick. Through this process an improvised narrative is formed that tells the story of an information factory in the future. The cut-up technique employed is perhaps closer to David Shields (Reality Hunger) and Kenneth Goldsmith (Uncreative Writing) than William Burroughs.

The Tangent Factories updates our understanding of intuition in a post human context.

The visuals used within the graphic novel are also “detourned”. These hauntological images are mixed: painted xeroxs, fragments from contemporary sources.

My paper featured a short reading from the graphic novel with images. I then discussed/unpacked some of the issues at stake within the work.

The central questions within this research are as follows:

• Can “intuition” be reimagined for a post human context?

• How can appropriation remain useful for fictional world building and the formation of alternative narratives?
