The sustainable value assessment in digital health interventions for primary care: scoping review protocol

Research output: Contribution to conferenceAbstractpeer-review

Abstract

Delivered as a oral presentation.

1) Study background and aims
The healthcare sector is working on improving sustainability, and digital health interventions are key to this transformation. This scoping review focuses on digital health for sustainable primary care with an aim to 1) explore the conceptualisation, awareness and measurement of the sustainable value of digital health interventions for primary care and 2) describe the barriers and facilitators to using sustainable digital health interventions in primary care.

2) Methods
The Joanna Brigs Institute PCC (population, concept, and context) framework was used for the scoping review protocol: Population: not applicable, Concept: sustainable value of digital health interventions and Context: primary care in England. The search strategy was divided into three stages (pearl-growing, key words using operators and reference list search). The results were analysed using qualitative content analysis.

3) Results
The results are classified according to the triple-bottom-line (social-environmental-financial) and a general conceptualisation of sustainability in digital health interventions within primary care. Overall, how to evaluate integrated social, environmental and financial sustainability was lacking for digital health interventions in primary care. Additionally, sustainability is mainly defined by economic aspects, acceptability and long-term outcomes.

4) Discussion and importance of findings
The scoping review highlights the need to develop a standardised and validated tool to assist decision-makers in evaluating the sustainable value (triple-bottom-line) of digital health interventions in primary care. Moreover, understanding the sustainable value of digital health interventions will help create new evaluation tools to improve the quality of digital health technologies and how they can be used in partnership with service users and within interdisciplinary teams.
