    Abstract

Community-based participatory research (CBPR) into modern-day slavery in Western Kenya is investigated through the mediated collection of community stories. Drawing from an approach known as PEARLS – Participatory Education and Action Research Learning Scenarios the project is borne from the community media practice and research partnership collaborations of Community Media 4 Kenya (CM4K). The CM4K partnership between the Universities of Brighton and Rongo and a network of community organisations and self-help groups is in its 7th year and is currently engaged in the development of a community radio station to empower and sustain community needs and voices through a community development approach to community media. The paper presents an emerging symbiotic relationship between community media practices and CBPR as an innovative approach to community/university partnerships through community stories of modern-day slavery in Migori County, Kenya. A third of the way through its timeline, an overview of the project is presented prior to a critical evaluation of the collaborative activities to date. These activities include community conversations and scenario-based participatory learning workshops designed to elicit community participants perceptions of modern-day slavery; its causes; and how such community problems might be addressed – assisted through the knowledge sharing and awareness raining capacities of community media. The outcomes of week-long intensive community media practice and CBPR workshops are discussed together with an emerging typology of forms of modern-day slavery and its causes. The paper concludes with an exploration of the potential causal effects of tribal customs and traditions to the continuation of modern-day slavery.
