Abstract
This entry explores the social causation of disease. First, social class as a cause for inequalities is examined, with a particular focus on the work of Wright, Bourdieu, Weber, and Marx. Second, racism, minority stress, and socioeconomic inequalities are considered as fundamental causes of disease incidence. Third, some of the social determinants of health are explored. Sociological theories have an important role to play in our understanding of the social causation of disease.
