Abstract
ln Uganda, it has become popular to send pygmy children to boarding school in the attempt to 'help' them and change their living conditions. Against the backdrop of 10 months of fieldwork in Uganda, this article discusses how children give a symbolic and material gift to schools, development organizations and the nation by entering into a willingness to be changed. The question is whether it is also a gift for the children.
