Abstract

In this book, teachers from a variety of backgrounds reflect on their journeys into teaching and discuss the impact of these diverse experiences on the way they teach. The authors adopt an autoethnographic approach to telling stories of transition and profound transformation, and discuss how these have shaped their professional identities and teaching methods. Stories of change can illustrate the experiences and practices of teaching in a range of educational contexts. By capturing these personal stories, this book will inform and support readers who are studying to become teachers and those already working in education by developing their understanding and empathy with the role. By engaging with the autobiographies of the authors, we suggest that readers will be able to reflect on their own progression and that this has the potential to increase confidence with their personal and professional identities - which are inextricably linked. Autoethnography can develop self-knowledge and understanding in the reader and writer of such texts, offering unique insights and individual ways of being that will benefit students and staff in a range of educational settings. This book values the telling and sharing of stories as a strategy for enabling teachers to learn from one another and help them to feel more supported - you are not alone.
