Abstract

SeeSaw Magazine www.seesawmagazine.com SeeSaw Magazine was founded in 2004 by Aaron Schuman - an international online photography journal inspired by the notion that, '[Photography] is the capture and projection of the delights of seeing; it is the defining of observation full and felt.' (Walker Evans). Recognized as one of the earliest and most influential online photography publications of its kind, SeeSaw Magazine serves as an important resource and research tool for the international photographic community. Each issue features a selection of portfolios by both established and emerging artists, as well as photo-related essays, reviews and interviews with some of the medium’s most prominent practitioners (including Stephen Shore, John Baldessari, Paul Graham, Elinor Carucci, Alec Soth, Richard Misrach, Jem Southam, and more). SeeSaw has both championed and helped to launch the careers of a number of photographers who have and continue to make valuable and lasting contributions to photography. As an online publication, SeeSaw Magazine (and its entire archive) is available to the public, helping to make carefully considered and serious photography – as well as the dialogues that surround it, and the diverse subjects it may address – accessible to not only those with a keen interest and investment in contemporary photography, but anyone with internet access. In 2006, SeeSaw was selected for preservation by The British Library – in collaboration with the UK Web Archive Consortium – and continues to be archived regularly within their collection. Furthermore, strong collaborative links have been formed with a number of prominent organizations, including The Photographers’ Gallery, Fotografie_Museum Amsterdam, Photoworks, FotoFest, Aperture, Blindspot, PhotoMonth Krakow, The National Media Museum, Rhubarb-Rhubarb, QUAD, The Magenta Foundation, Lens Culture, The Saatchi Gallery, and many more.
