Abstract

Rendell [née Grasemann; pseud. Barbara Vine], Ruth Barbara, Baroness Rendell of Babergh (1930–2015), novelist and short story writer, was born on 17 February 1930 at 66 Gordon Road, South Woodford, Essex, the only child of Arthur Grasemann (1900–1973), schoolmaster, and his wife Ebba Elise, née Kruse (1891–1963), also a teacher, Swedish by birth but brought up in Denmark.
