Abstract

Automation, digitalization and remote working concepts are expected to have an important place in the new normal approach of maritime transport after the COVID-19 pandemic. “Remote Working” can take a permanent place in the maritime sector with the automation of ships. However, it does not seem possible for the crew and shore personnel to carry out shipping operations with today's technologies to work remotely. Recently, a growing research trend has been observed investigating various aspects of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS). This chapter aims to address the cohesion of two popular topics of the maritime industry (1) the contactless working concept triggered by the coronavirus outbreak, and (2) the autonomous shipping offering remote control.
