Abstract

A summary of authors’ efforts in education and training activities, which have led to the idea of launching a “Learning Centre for Earthquake Resistant Buildings”, is presented here. The activities include a series of four international workshops and three summer schools (from May 2002 until August 2006), as well as participating, and becoming prize nominee, in the first Worldwide Engineering Award (by UNESCO and DaimlerChrysler). The learning centre’s primary aim is to increase awareness of the general public as the clientele of the building industry, by demonstrating a sample of earthquake resistant house, as well as providing a practical exhibition for pupils to gain knowledge and share experiences. This article provides an analysis on the role of the centre in public awareness and disaster prevention.
