Abstract
Ever since King Jigme Singye Wangchuck of Bhutan propounded the concept of Gross National Happiness, a number of studies have been undertaken, discussing the parameters, validity and implications of the concept. A number of tenets of Gross National Happiness have also been put forth, however, the most widely accepted one among these is "sustainable and equitable socio-economic development; environmental conservation; preservation and promotion of culture; and good governance"listed in the Tenth Five Year Plan, published by the Royal Government of Bhutan for the years 2008-2013. The focus of this paper, therefore, is on the aspect of preservation of culture and the study of its significance for Gross National Happiness. The paper also discusses how culture shapes human identity and therefore, can have important implications on happiness.
