Plans, Trans & Embodied Futurity: Cartographies of care in the LGBTQ capital of the UK

Research output: Contribution to conferenceOther

Abstract

In this presentation I present an overview of the main argument from my PhD thesis. Working between the fields of geography and planning, I contribute to a transfeminist approach in city planning. By focusing on the ‘trans inclusive’ city of Brighton & Hove, I found that current planning practice in relation to trans lives is ‘equalities-led’. This approach is better than not considering trans lives but is limited in producing actions that will reduce inequalities. Building on creative mapping conducted with trans inhabitants of the city, I argue for an approach that centers care and the interrelationships of different spaces in the city. This ‘infrastructural approach’ to trans life in the city requires practitioners to broaden their imaginations, and center the needs around housing and mobility that are important for making life liveable.
