Abstract
A 2000-word essay commissioned by graphic designer Tim Sumner for the Paper Bag Archive. The Paper Bag Archive, in its own words, is ‘devoted to the collection, conservation and celebration of these once ubiquitous items. The archive provides us with an insight into our relatively recent consumer past.’ The archive produces themed publications of paper bags in the form of zines; each is accompanied by an opening essay written to commission. Annebella Pollen's ‘Paper Tiger’ essay opens the 2024 volume on the theme of department stores.
