Abstract
Every May, the nursing profession celebrates International Nurses’ Day, a time to recognise and highlight the invaluable contributions nurses make to global health. However, this year, the usual celebrations, have been overshadowed by troubling news about the future of the nursing profession. A policy brief of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development [1] referring to the latest data from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), which asks 15-year-old schoolchildren what they think they will do by the age of 30, indicated a decline in the attractiveness of the profession amongst half of the 38 OECD countries. This worrying trend has prompted alarm from the International Council of Nurses (ICN) and media outlets. Should we be worried?
