Abstract
The technique of strengthening RC columns by adding concrete jackets is examined inthis study, using the finite element method. In practice, when a reinforced concrete jacketis constructed around a column, the column is already preloaded due to existing serviceloads. The effect of original column preloading on the behaviour of strengthenedspecimens is examined in this work, for different preloading values. Anotherphenomenon that is investigated is the shrinkage of the jacket concrete. From this study,it is evident that preloading influences the behaviour of the strengthened column only forlarge axial load values, while the effect of jacket concrete shrinkage is more important, even for small axial load values.
