Abstract
Based on ten years research in the archive and collection of the London couturier Norman Hartnell, this chapter offers up an analysis of the London couturier's working practices and his creative output, within the context of his personal life and the wider context of the bespoke dressmaking scene of London's court dressmakers and couturiers between 1923 and 1979. Research methods include the close study of objects of fashionable dress designed by Norman Hartnell, and the original sketched designs and photographs of his collections. Personal interviews with Hartnell's loyal staff bring these objects and images to life.
