Abstract

As Benjamin Britten's librettist and the wife of John Piper, Myfanwy Piper is often presented as the consummate brainy hostess who cheerfully fed and watered the great men of mid-century modernism and occasionally chipped in. It was her idea that Britten tackle Henry James' story 'The Turn of the Screw' for a new opera commission, and her ability to combine her own literary sensibility domestic experience that made her the perfect librettist.
