Abstract
The growing breadth of applications for MXenes within biomedicine reflects the unique and versatile properties of this expanding family of 2-dimensional nanomaterials. In particular, their tunable hydrophilic, flexible, mechanically strong, highly conductive, optical transparent, and photosensitive properties have led to applications as diverse as cancer therapeutics, medical imaging, neural guidance, biosensing, theranostic wound dressings, and other smart sensor devices for use within regenerative medicine. In this chapter, key aspects in the development of MXenes for healthcare technologies are considered including issues of biocompatibility, the suppression of infection and inflammation for improved wound healing, and MXenes as sensor and biosensor diagnostic and theranostic tools. The challenges and opportunities for MXenes within the global healthcare sector are considered in addition to the need to better understand the mechanisms by which MXenes may interact at the bio-interface for therapeutic benefit.
