Abstract

The physiotherapist plays an important role in the coordinated multidisciplinary management of treatable symptoms in a progressive, untreatable disease such as ALS. Assessment of physical and respiratory symptoms and provision of advice, exercises, management strategies, and aids allow adjustment to altered demands of activities of daily living. An improvement in the quality of life is the principal aim of intervention in ALS and can be achieved by person-centred care, shaped to the goals of each individual.
