    Abstract

This paper introduces a new use of multiprotocol over ATM (MPOA) in internetworking logical IP subnetwork (LIS) environments for the efficient utilisation of ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) network resources. Although the MPOA has been initially planned to be used for internetworking LANE (LAN emulation) environments, it can (or a similar approach) be also deployed in inter-LIS communications given the fact that establishing shortcut VCCs (virtual channel connections) between IP end users, rather than the use of routers, is sought. In addition, QoS (quality of service) support for real-time multimedia applications in such internetworking LISs, using a new approach is also provided.
