Abstract
This paper introduces an alternative method for the design of transverse reinforcement of rectilinear trajectory of RC columns. The method is iterative and is based on the principle of strength balance. This principle invokes the re-establishment of the original column axial strength once the concrete cover surrounding the confined core spalls off. In contrast with a classical code approach, the proposed method does not exploit a so-called equivalence rule between spiral and rectilinear reinforcement but invokes explicitly the principle of strength balance making use of a confined concrete model.
