Abstract
This essay was commissioned by Photoworks to accompany their 2014 Brighton Photo Biennial community and exhibition project entitled Mass Education, organised in collaboration with social research organisation, Mass Observation. 'Mackintoshes and Trilbies: Photographing like Humphrey Spender' examined the processes and outputs through which local community groups had engaged with the legacy of documentary projects from the 1930s.
