Abstract
This text is based on research undertaken in the Municipal Archives and the Musée des Tissus, Lyon, the Archives Nationales and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris. It examines designers and manufacturers of silk and rayon fabrics intended for use by the Paris couture industry during the period of the German Occupation of France. It assesses how both the famous fashion textile manufacturer in Lyon and the Paris couturiers shifted their design choices, and the extreme difficulties they faced in their struggle to keep their trade alive at a time when their businesses fell directly under German control.
