Abstract

This collection of essays explores a number of issues, primarily concerned with value, which might arise from the study and practice of sport. Although predominantly sociological, the text emphasizes the diversity possible within both approaches or methodologies and topics within legitimate studies of sport: thus, some chapters should be seen as philosophy, others as politics, yet others as policy studies. There is a context set throughout by the claims and activities of the Olympic movement, which often provide key examples. The topics considered include: sport and nationalism; anti-doping policy and Olympianism; the context of sports policy in the UK and in Germany; and amateurism and professional sport.
