“I love giving presents”: the emotion of material culture

Abstract

This chapter examines Mass Observation writing about gift exchanges and reflects upon Theodore Adorno's 1951 essay that the practice of giving presents is being forgotten. It makes a case for attachment between people and things that remains throughout process of commodification of everyday life.
