Abstract
The recognition of cations and anions with biological and environmental relevance by supramolecular receptors, such as calixarenes, has been widely investigated. This review covers developments made in homooxacalixarene-based ion receptors over the past twenty years (from 2004 to 2024). The binding, detection and recognition properties of hexahomotrioxacalix[3]arenes, dihomooxacalix[4]arenes and tetrahomodioxacalix[4]arenes towards organic ammonium ions, metal cations, anions and ion pairs are discussed. Some homooxacalixarene metal complexes and clusters are also reported. Lastly, the outlook and future perspectives for these macrocyclic ion receptors are presented.
