    Abstract

The intersection of gender and sport in anthropology leaves many questions to be asked and investigated. Most of the ethnographic work done has concentrated on gender ideas and questions about how masculinity is embodied through participating in sport. A second line of inquiry is emerging around how the scientific investigation of the materiality of the human body is used to define “woman” in order to regulate female participation in elite sport. Beyond those two threads, the dynamic interplay between sport and gender is a wide-open field for anthropologists.
