Abstract
In 2014, the design research project "Game On: Level-Up. City for Gamers" was initiated and conceptualized at NN (NoNames Design Research and Studies [https://www.nonames.xyz/]). In a survey then, this project was titled by our audience “gaming heaven”; “a state-of-the-art experience of gamers’ ultimate dreams in mixed reality”. However, the original idea had been brewing in our, the NN’s founders’, minds since the early 1980s, a time when we were first introduced to the IBM 8086, after spending years with our beloved Amiga 500 and Commodore 64.
As part of the first generation of serious computer programmers and gamers, we often found ourselves dreaming of a “gaming utopia” while optimizing graphics, even as technology lagged far behind our vision for advanced game scripting. Back then, we organized our first neighbourhood gaming tournament, channelling our passion for games into community-driven experiences during our childhood.
This project represents a lifelong dream that we have nurtured and refined for over 40 years. It is our contribution to building a world for dedicated and talented designers and gamers—a bold leap toward establishing a shared platform where they can collaborate and shape the future of gaming. This enables us to impart our visions to organizations and individuals who share our vision and are positioned to push this project boundaries, and our collective dream, to life—ushering in a future of "The Gaming City, Gaming World" for everyone.
We dedicate this project to all "Game Lovers," especially those who find joy in seeing the magic of games, behind the scenes and beyond the screen, in every world they explore. We still yearn for the day when we will once again have the time to play video games like the good old days.
